Plant 42 Runway Pavement Rehabilitation

Project Type: Pavement Rehabilitation
Client: USACE LA District
Category: Paving
Year Initiated / Completed: 2014-2014
This project was the first Task Order issued under this USACE LA District POCA. The Plant 42 Runway 22 Rehabilitation was needed to replace the aging 6.5” concrete overlay that, due to ASR issues, was creating a continued concern for FOD control on the runway. The Plant 42 Runway 22 Rehabilitation was managed exclusively by MBC staff and consisted of a
construction team that performed the following work:
- Installed and maintained airfield closure including lighted X-markers and lighted barricades
- Although the runway was closed there were active taxiways that had to be maintained and provided with airfield trained flaggers during the concrete haul/ placement
- Installation and maintenance of temporary access points to preserve the existing AC shoulders during the course of construction
- Saw-cutting and removal of 101,500 SF/2000 CY of 6.5” thick concrete overlay. The removal was required to be done with non-destructive methods to preserve the underling concrete base
- Sandblast and prep of the existing concrete base surface for the new overlay by covering with burlap and moisture conditioning 24 hours prior to placement
- Installation of random slab reinforcement using WWF
- Crush removed concrete to 6” minus recycled concrete
- 2000 CY of new concrete was produced using an on-site batch plant and concrete was placed using conventional concrete paving equipment
- Installation of over 20,000 LF of compression joint seal
- Water blast preparation and replacement of existing airfield markings
